Abstract

13,689. Mrazsek, F. M. June 13. Soldering. - For soldering aluminium and its alloys, a solder is used consisting of tin, zinc, aluminium, and silver, in such proportions that the tin exceeds the zinc, the zinc exceeds the aluminium, and the aluminium exceeds the silver. The proportions given are 120-170 parts of tin, 30-60 parts of zinc, 2-10 parts of aluminium, and À5-5 parts of silver. The melting-point of the solder does not exceed 300‹, and the cleaned surfaces are heated not above that temperature and the solder rubbed on with a scraper, bit, or brush until the surface has a uniform appearance by reflected light, this condition being referred to as "revivification." No flux is used in this process and the coated pieces are then or subsequently pressed together while hot. In manufacturing the solder, the silver and aluminium are melted with a suitable flux, the tin and then the zinc being added. To remove oxides &c., the molten alloy is preferably stirred with a cold iron rod.
