Abstract

13,203. Hoy, H. A. June 7. Surfacing and polishing. -In a machine for operating upon plane surfaces, in which the work is mounted upon a reciprocating table and is acted upon by a rotary grinder which is continuously traversed across it, au additional short reciprocating movement is imparted to the grinder in the direction of its traverse. The grinder is preferably mounted in an inclined position so that only a small portion of its bevelled edge may be in grinding contact with the work. The longitudinal reciprocation may be imparted to the frame carrying the grinder, instead of to the table. The grinder 17, Figs. 3 and 5, is mounted at the end of a spindle 15<a> revolving in a sleeve 16, which is carried by a saddle 5 which slides on ways on a second saddle n. The saddle 5 is given a short reciprocatory catory movement across the saddle n by means of a crank-pin 13 which moves in a slot 15. The crank-pin 13 is mounted on a disk 12 which is driven through worm gearing 8, 9 and elliptical gearing 10, 11 from the shaft 6. The grinding-spindle is driven by an endloss belt 22<a>, Fig. 1; which passes over a pulley 23 on the driving-shaft p, guide-pulleys 24, 28. and pulleys 25, 27; 26 on The grinder is adjusted witli reference to the work by a worm 22 and worm-wheel 21, which is threaded internally and works on a screw 19 carried by the sleeve 16. The saddle n is traversed across the table a on ways n<1> by means of a screw o, which is rotated by a belt passing over pulleys q on the driving-shaft p and pulleys s on a shaft r and by a worm and worm-wheel and bevelled gearing w, x. The gears x are loose on the shaft o, and are alternately secured to it by a clutch y operated by a lever 3 rocked by the engagement of projections on the saddle n with springs 4 and stops z on a sliding rod 2. The table a; Fig. 1, is reciprocated by a screw b and nut c. The screw b is driven through worm gearing h, h<1> from the shaft d. Loose pulleys f, f<1> and fast pulleys e, e<1>, one driven by an open belt and the other by a crossed belt from the main countershaft, are mounted on the shaft d, the belts being governed by belt-shifters g. At the end of each traverse of the table, the lever j<1> is rocked automatically and operates a plate m, slots in which engage pins on the bett-shifters g to operate the belts. The slots are so formed that when the plate is in its central position the belts are on the loose pulteys, but when the plate is moved in either direction the belts are moved on to one or other of the fast pulleys.
