Abstract

12,420. Lancashire Dynamo and Motor Co., and Stansfield, W. May 29. Dynamos, regulating.-In a sytem of electric distribution fed by a number of compound-wound generators connected in parallel, the potential of the machine is equalized by means of an equalizing - conductor and exciting - machines, the field strengths of which are proportional to the current flowing in the equalizing-conductor. As shown in Fig. 1, compound-wound generators G<1>, G<2>, &c. are connected in parallel across the leads P, N, and T is the equalizing-conductor. Each generator is provided with a series winding Gc and a main shunt winding Gs connected to the auxiliary machines E<1>, E<2>, &c. Each auxiliary machine is provided with a field winding Et, the energization of which depends upon the potential of the machine to which it is connected. When two generators are employed to supply the system, only one need be supplied with an auxiliary machine. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the winding Gc<1> is placed upon the field of the auxiliary machine, while in some cases a winding Gc may also be placed upon the main generator. In another modification, the auxiliary machines E<1>, E<2>, &c., Fig. 1, may be provided with a shunt or series winding provided with a regulating resistance. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the machines G<1>, G<2>, &c. are arranged in groups, each provided with one auxiliary machine E preferably driven by a motor M. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the generator is excited by a series winding Gc and a second winding Gs excited by the machine E alone. These arrangements of machines are particularly applicable when the individual machine or group of machines are a considerable distance apart.
