Abstract

12,353. Austin, L. W. May 29, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Thermo - electric batteries. - As a receiving apparatus for electromagnetic radiation, a thermo-couple is employed consisting of a metal such as aluminium in light and adjustable contact with a metalloid substance such as tellurium, of high specific resistance. Fig. 1 shows a block 3 of tellurium, formed with a knife-edge, resting on a rod 1 of aluminium, which may be continually rotated by a motor. The heat produced at the point of contact when the oscillations are received causes a current to flow through the telephone 8 in the local circuit. The pressure between the parts 3, 1 is adjustable by means of the screw 5.
