Abstract

9937. Allan, R. S., Henderson, J. R., and Wilson, G., [trading as Allan & Co., R. S.]. April 29. Trenching; carving.-A wood grooving or trenching machine of the kind described in Specification No. 17,960, A.D. 1903, in which a reciprocating work-carrying frame travels in angularly adjustable guides but itself always remains in the same angular position, has its work frame adjustable in two directions at right-angles to one another in a plane at right-angles to the plane in which it is reciprocated. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the work-frame s is connected through slots t, u, and blocks v, w by bolts y, x or the like to a slide o, which is traversed by a hand-wheel p, bevel-gear q, and screw r in guides in a member g, pivoted on the bolt f to a table c. This table c is moved longitudinally by a hand-operated screw e, on a plate b, itself movable transversely on the bed plate by a screw d operated by a hand-wheel. Scales and stops for indicating and limiting the movements of the table c and plate b may be provided. The slide o has a slot z for the passage of the bolt y and the frame g, which is moved angularly on the curved rack j projecting from the table c by a hand-wheel m, is fixed in position by a block and bolt passing through the slot 3, the position being indicated by a scale. The work is held by a clamp 4 and also by pivoted adjustable clips 5 against which it is pressed by a spring 6. The work frame may be held during adjustment by supports moved clear when the adjustment is made. For trenching stair stringers or supports for shelves &c., the frame g is adjusted to position, and the work then moved above the cutter 18 by the screw d to obtain the required depth of cut and reciprocated by the screw r to obtain the cut. The work is fed along in the frame s, the spacing being determined by stops 9 which are normally held raised to engage a previously cut groove by springs 10 but may be depressed by handles 16 on a rocking shaft 15 connected through links to a pin on the stop 9. Either of the stops may be held inoperative by pins passing through them, the links passing round the operating pins being slotted to allow either of the stops to be independently operated by the shaft 15. The bed-plate a may be mounted on rails or rollers or pivoted on a carriage mounted on rails or rollers. For cutting curved grooves the frame s is replaced by a frame 20, Fig. 8, revolvably connected to the slide o and adjusted by a circular rack 22 and worm gear. Grooves of the form shown in Fig. 12 may be cut, the horizontal groove 30 being cut by traversing the carriage by the screw e. By use of the circular frame 20, grooves as shown in Fig. 17 may be cut.
