Abstract
8548. Mooney, H. E. April 12. Protractors.-A graduated ring a carries centrally a hub b, around which rotate a course pointer c and pointers g, h, i, each of which can be clamped to the ring a. The course pointer c is a sheet of transparent material, ruled as shown, to which can be attached the graduated ring f. In laying down the position of a ship on a chart, the rings a, f are set so as to allow for compass error or variation, and the pointers g, h, i are set to the bearings found, and clamped to the ring a. The instrument is then moved over the chart, keeping the vertical graduations on the pointer c, north and south, until the edges of the pointers cut the objects the bearings of which were found. The position of the ship is marked by the axis m of the instrument. This instrument may be used for other purposes.
