Chimneys.-A rectangular framework of metal beams 10 and an inner and outer series of beams 11, 14 which are attached thereto by hooks 12, 15 are embedded in the base of the chimney, which is composed of a solid mass of concrete or is constructed by blocks of concrete &c. The beams 11 of the inner series are embedded in the inner wall 16 of the chimney, which is composed of a mixture of two-fourths burnt clay, one-fourth raw milled clay, and one-fourth cement. The beams of the outer series are embedded in the outer concrete wall 17 and in its continuation 24, and are encircled at intervals by rings 25. The uprights in each series are of different lengths but are linked on to continuing uprights where necessary by interlocking hooks 26, Fig. 8. The beams 10 may be further secured in the concrete base by straps which pass over and depend from the corners or some other part of the framework, and are provided at their lower ends with upturned hooks. An air space 17<a>, communicating with the outer atmosphere by openings 18 in the outer wall, is provided between the two walls of the chimney and is closed at the top by a bridge 19 of metal &c. The two walls are further separated by a sleeve 20 of non-combustible elastic or yielding material, and the top of the inner wall is provided with an annular section 21 of elastic material held in place by an annular flange 22. The flue opening into the chimney is below the top of the inner wall.
