Abstract

6832. Ellam, W. H., and Ellis, E. T. March 21. Tyres, pneumatic &c.-That type of device for preventing side-slip described in Specification No. 16,401, A.D. 1905, in which chains are attached at the sides of a segmental tread band or cover so as to come into contact with the road only when slipping tends to occur, is applied to tyres with continuous covers or bands. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, rows of chain a are secured by rivets c of bent metal embracing the straight parts of the links, which are bent over behind a fabric layer h embedded in the continuous cover or band, the parts being vulcanized together when in position. In another form, the rivets for securing the chains comprise short lengths of metal tubing flattened to leave two eyes at each side, the eyes on one side embracing the links, and those on the other being threaded on a cord or the like embedded in the cover or band. A raised part of the tread may be provided between the rows of chain, or the chains may lie in grooves in the tread. The tread may be grooved or corrugated. The chains may be so arranged that they only come into action when the tyre is not fully inflated. According to the Provisional Specification, the central part of the tyre tread may be protected by studs or chains.
