Abstract

6498. Jeffery, J. A., and Jeffery, B. A. March 18. Gas and like engines, igniting in. Sparking- plugs are so constructed that deposition of shortcircuiting media around the terminals is either prevented or, if formed, is removed by the normal discharge of the igniting-current. The exposed area of one of the terminals is so small that the fouling-matter collected between them is insufficient to carry the current without becoming heated to the point of disintegration. The insulation A, Fig. 1, is securely held in the shell 2 by the gland 4, and carries a copper conducting-rod 5 to which is joined the platinum, iridium, or like terminal 6 which is flush with the flat surface of the insulator 4 and is less than one twenty-fifth of an inch in diameter. The rod 5 makes contact with the cap at the end of the plug and serves to keep the terminal 6 cool. In the modification shown in Fig. 2. a small orifice 6<1> is substituted for the platinum terminal, so that the conductor 5<1> is exposed.
