Abstract

6427. Busch, H. Sept. 1, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Carving or shaping by cutting.-In a machine for shaping and cutting ornaments for the hair of celluloid and like materials, the main shaft 4, which is driven by a handle or pulley, has a pinion gearing with a wheel 7 four times as large. The wheel 7 is carried on an axle 8, on which are mounted a toothed disk 9, a cam 10, and a pin disk 11. The work 31 is clamped between a plate 30 and a piece of flat iron 23 mounted on angle-pieces 21, 22 on a transversely sliding base 20. The plate 30 is carried on a square rod 29 supported in levers 27, pivoted to bearing-plates 25, 26, and operated by a rod 41 moved forward by a cam 42 on the shaft 43. This shaft 43 also carries a lever 44, engaged by a lever 45, which is actuated by the disk 9, so that when the end of the lever falls in a recess in the disk, the lever 44 drops and the plate 30 is released from the work. Immediately afterwards, a projection on the cam 10 engages the crank-arm of an axle 39, and a forked lever 38 on the axle is consequently oscillated. The lever 38 operates a lever. 37,mounted on a shaft 32 carrying four hooks 33, which are thus pushed forward, under; the work to prevent it from falling before being clamped. By this time, the lever 45 has left the recess in the disk 9, and the jaw 30 closes on a fresh piece of work. The projection on the cam 10 then leaves the crank axle 39, and the hooks are returned by a spring 40. The pin disk 11 is provided with three pins of different height on one side, and a pin. 15 on the other side ; the former pins engage a two-armed angular lever 16, which through an axle 17 and levers 18, 19 traverses the base 20, to obtain three successive cuts of different depth ; the pin 15 brings back the base to its first position. The knives 55<a> are mounted on an arm 49, Fig. 3, pivoted on a shaft 59 carried by a head-piece 48, which is secured to a rod and its reciprocated between guides 51, 52 by a connecting-rod 47 and adjustable crank 46. The knife-holder has a guiding- iron 56, Fig. 2, which is pressed up to the templet 24 fixed to the bottom of the flat-iron 23 by a spring 54. In order that the knife may perform the return stroke out of contact with the work, a thumb-lever 57, Fig. 2, mounted on the shaft 59, is made to contact an adjustable stop ring 60 to lower the knife-holder, which is held in this position by a pawl 58 and notch in the thumblever, until on the return stroke the pawl is disengaged by an adjustable lug 61.
