Abstract

6202. Daimler Motoren Ges. March 19, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Differential gearing for motor-vehicles is arranged away from the axle and transmits motion to the two parts through separate trains of bevelgearing. The gear, Fig. 2, of the internallytoothed type, receives motion from the longitudinal shaft a through a universal joint b. The driven members of the gear are connected one to the shaft h and the other to the sleeve i. The shaft and sleeve are inclined so that the equalsized bevel-wheels m, mounted on the sleeve and shaft respectively, may each gear with one of the bevel-wheels p, q secured to the ends of the parts o, n of the axle. The driving-member of the differential gear carries two pairs of planetary pinions of different sizes meshing together, as shown in Fig. 1. The large pinions f are narrow and gear with an internally toothed ring k connected to the sleeve i, while the small pinions are wide enough to mesh with the large pinions, and also with an internally toothed ring g connected to the shaft h. This construction allows the two parts of the axle to be inclined to one another. In a modification, the two parts of the axle are made hollow and are mounted on a solid through axle, which may serve as a bearing for the shaft h, or may allow it to pass through without touching.
