Abstract

5671. British Thomson-Houston Co., and Hopps, B. March 8. Motors, controlling ; dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power ; dynamos, regulating. -Relates to the system of motor control described in Specification No. 5263, A.D. 1906, in which the generator field is reduced to a minimum when the changes in the motor connexions are made. The main feature consists in mounting the foot pedal E on the spindle e of the generator switch F, G and effecting a lock between this spindle and the motor controller spindle by means of cam-disks B<1>, D on each, co-operating with a locking-lever C. An arm r on the spindle e also adjusts the tension of a spring R.that regulates the effect of the governor N on the throttle valve P of the prime-movers that drive the generator. The spring R is weaker than the pedal spring L. The generator has a shunt winding J in series with a resistance F and a series interpole winding I which can be short-circuited by the switch G. In positions 1, 2 of the pedal E, the locking-lever C, pivoted at f, is pulled by a spring d on the smaller radius of the cam D, and allows the motor-controller to be moved to alter the connexions of the motors, or to engage a small notch in the disk B<1> when the controller lever is in the 'off ' position. When the lever is moved into running or reverse positions 1, 3, 4. the pedal E may be moved into its positions 3, 4, thereby cutting-out resistance F from the shunt field J and opening the short-circuit at G of the winding I. Simultaneously the pull of the spring R on the throttle spindle is reduced, enabling the primemover to speed the generator up to increase the voltage. In each position 1, 3, 4 of the controller handle, the greater radius of the cam D thrusts the locking-lever C into a large notch in the disk B' and prevents any change from being made in the motor connexions when the generator is supplying current. To accelerate the engine in climbing grades, an additional switch may be provided, controlling a resistance in either or both the series and shunt field circuits of the generator. This switch may be interconnected with the lever controlling the throttle valve of the engine, or may be operated independently, preferably by a foot-pedal.
