Abstract

4754. Gibbons, W. G. Feb. 27. Shaft couplings. -In a device for absorbing abnormal shock in ships' steering - gear the coupling shown in Fig. 1 is used. The member A<1>, keyed to the shaft A but free to slide endways upon it, has upon one end a series of faces A<2>, inclined to the axial plane. The faces A<2> engage with counterpart inclined faces B<1> on a second clutch member B, which is free to rotate upon the shaft but cannot move endways. The member B is operatively connected to the pinion C, which is loose on the shaft A and driven through a friction clutch C' of known form. The inclined faces A', B' are in series of opposite hand, so that control of movement in either direction is effected. Relative movement of the two members A', B is limited by the stop nut D and controlled by the spring D<1>, bearing against the member A' and the collar D', which is made adjustable on the shaft A by means of the nut D<3>. A second spring (not shown) may be placed between the members A', B to throw and hold them apart if the spring D<1> is withdrawn. In a modification, a third clutch member is interposed between the members A', B with opposite faces counterpart to the faces A', B', in order that a greater angular movement may take place before the member A' reaches the stop D. There may be two or more such intermediate members.
