Abstract

4578. Bremaecker, E. de. Feb. 25. Switehes. - High-tension switches are operated by an electro - magnet supplied with low-tension current and polarized by a permanent magnet. The electro-magnet E has an armature A polarized by a permanent -magnet Q, and the armature is connected to a platinum contact M by metal rods B, C and a porcelain rod T coated with an insulating-layer. When a low-tension current is passed through the coils E, the contact M is moved to touch the contact F on the bracket I, thus completing the high-tension circuit. This may be broken by reversing the low-tension current, and the spark across the contacts M, F is blown out by the electro-magnet Z, the windings of which are In series with the contacts. To reverse the current in the coil E, two batteries and two switches may be connected, as shown in Fig. 3 ; or one button may be used to close ope circuit when pressed and another circuit when released. Another form is shown in Fig. 6 in which a contact-spring R may be moved by a rod P to touch contacts C', C'. A single rocking switch may be used in which the reverse contacts are made by depressing the opposite ends of the rocker. Only one battery is required with the switch shown in Fig. 9, in which two contact-springs R<1>, R<2> may be brought into contact with studs C<1>, C<2>. When a current is passed through the coils E, the armature moves from one of its two positions to the other quickly, and gives a rapid movement to the contact M. Multiple contacts may be used to break the high-tension circuit at several points, and by having the moving contact provided with two contact-faces the relay may be used as a reversing-switch.
