Sifting and separating ores.-In apparatus for separating gold-dust from auriferous sand or earth, either by dry sifting or by wet methods, in which the screens or sieves are mounted on elastic supports, and the gold-dust is received on a support provided with transverse ridges, grooves, and brushes, having a linen or other fabric covering, the auriferous sand, with or without water from the channel b, is fed into the stationary funnel a, which is provided with a sieve c in order to hold back the coarser materials. The finer parts drop on to the deflecting plates d and then upon a series of inclined sieves e, f, g of which the uppermost has the largest, and the lowest the smallest, holes. Subsequently the dust falls on to the frame h, over which is stretched a linen sheet. The frame h is provided with ridges i, grooves k, and brushes l, intended to intercept and hold the gold-dust. Similar ridges and grooves are provided at the lower ends of the sieves f, g. The sieves and frame h are mounted on elastic supporting straps m, and may receive a shaking motion, either by hand or by means of a water-wheel driving the eccentric t by means of bands. When the process is used without water, the materials are first dried.
