3478. Josephson, J. M. Copelevitz-. Feb. 12. Stoppers.-The internal diameter of a screw cap A, fitted with a washer B of rubber, cork, &c., is such that the washer B overhangs the edge of the bottle neck to such an extent that the internal and external pressures exerted radially upon the neck by the washer B, when pressed down, may balance one another and so minimize the risk of fracture present when a conical stopper is pressed into the mouth of the bottle. The threads in the cap A engage a screwthreaded metal ring, having a square hole E in the centre and formed of two parts C, D, Fig. 2, which are placed in the position shown, in a corresponding groove in the bottle neck, and are soldered together. In the case of large stoppers, the washer B may be fitted with a metal backing, which is held in place by a screw passing through the top of the cap A.
