Type.-Stamps, dies, and type are made of hard metal by softening or melting locally by a reducing- flame &c. and pressing with a comparatively soft negative die. In a machine for carrying out this process, blanks 3 are fed down a slide 4 on to a turret work - holder 1, in which they are held by a segment 5. They are brought round to the position 28, and a burner 6 is then swung down to soften them at the desired point. They then come to the position 29, where they are given a sharp blow by the die 8. The machine is operated by a hand cam-lever 16. When the lever 16 is raised, the work-holder is rotated through one step by a pawl operated by a lever 25, and the die head 9 is raised by a rack and pinion 32 and kept in raised position by a pawl 22. When the lever 16 is lowered, the head 9 is released and a sharp blow is struck, a spring 15 quickly raising the head. An ejector 27 is operated by the lever 25. Fluxes or other means may be used to prevent oxidation of the softened metal and the heating may be performed electrically. When operating upon large blanks, they may be rotated to ensure uniform softening. When making lead type, a negative die is made of nickel by electro-deposition and set in hard lead.
