Abstract
2165. Stjernberg, C. G. Jan. 28. Electricallyactuated apparatus. -The prime-mover of machinery working with variable and d intermittent loads is assisted when starting by a direct-current motor which is also adapted to store energy upon the retardation of the machinery. The prime-mover, shown as an alternating-current motor B, is assisted by a continuous-current motor D controlled by the Ward-Leonard or a similar system, and preferably mounted upon the same shaft as the motor B and winding-drum C. The motor D is supplied with current from a generator E driven by the motor &c. F, a fly-wheel G being mounted upon the common shaft. The speed of the motor D is governed by a controller I, which varies the current in the. fields of the generator E, and the controller H of the motor B may be adjusted to give corresponding speeds to the motor D, or a distribution of the load between the two motors may be adjusted by moving the controller levers relatively to each other. When the machinery is retarding, the motor D runs as a dynamo to charge a battery or to drive the dynamo E as a motor, thereby storing energy in the fly-wheel G. The reversing-switch N of the motor B may also be controlled by the main lever L of the controllers H, I. The resistance in the motor or armature circuit of the motor B, when it is a direct-current motor, may be automatically regulated by a centrifugal governor connected to the winder or electrically by means of a dynamo, the voltage of which is proportional to its speed and which is arranged in combination with suitable relays or equivalent devices whereby the resistance in the rotor or armature circuit is varied. Instead of a separate dynamo, the voltage of the motor or dynamo may be used to actuate the relays, or the resistance in the rotor or armature circuit may be varied in accordance with the current in the stator or field circuit of the motor by means of a contact ammeter.
