Abstract

1333. Potterat, L. Jan. 18. Electric traction on the series system. Conductors; switches.-The main conductor a, Fig. 1, is placed in series with the generators and divided into sections by switches 1, 2 which are normally closed. The conductors b, c, from which the cars 3 take their current, are sectioned to correspond with the main conductor and are arranged to overlap, as shown. The switches 1, 2 are automatically operated by the current as it passes to the cars. Fig. 2 shows a modified arrangement which gives a uniform loss on the line, but does not permit two cars to work on adjoining sections, two solenoids, wound to act in opposition, being placed on the same switch, as shown. In another modification, in which two sets of cars are arranged to run independently, three contact conductors are used controlled by double switches at the ends of the main conductor. Figs. 4 and 5 show alternative arrangements for permitting the cars to run in either direction, the previous arrangements only being intended for running in the direction indicated by the arrows. According as the collectors pass on to the conductors from one end or the other, the switch arms 35, 36 are moved over by the solenoids to one side or the other. Normally these arms are maintained by suitable means in the position indicated by the broken lines. Instead of placing the operating-solenoids in the main circuit they could be placed in a shunt circuit.
