Abstract

640. Richardson, H., Cooke, C. F., and South Durham Steel & Iron Co. Jan. 10. Switches.-A liquid controlling- switch has circular dipping, plates s which are adjustable on their centres, and means for making the switch inoperative whent the' liquid falls below a certain level. The circular dippers a are secured by bolts a<2> through their centres, so that they may be rotated when one part becomes worn. An open-bottom metal dish d is suspended in the tank c, and an overflow passage c<1> is provided which prevents the water from rising too high. The tank c and the dish d are connected in series with the solenoid e across the mains. When the water falls below the level of the dish d, the core e<1> of the solenoid drops into a slot in the disk a<3> on the shaft b<1>, thus preventing the operation of the switdh until the water reaches the working level again. The solenoid e may be provided with a core e<1>, which closes the main circuit when attracted, as shown in Fig. 3, and opens the main circuit when the water level falls below the dish. Or a maximum and no-load cut-out may be used to open the main circuit when the water level falls. The operating-lever g screws through the sheave h on to a small brake block j. The lever may be unscrewed, moved round to any desired position, and then locked by screwing up again.
