Abstract
29,433. Taylor, C., and Taylor, G. B. Dec. 27. Screwing.-The machine is specially designed for grinding the screwthread portions on jaws of the chucks described in Specification No. 14,146, A.D. 1887, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], but is also applicable for other like purposes. A blank x; Fig. 4, which when cut across at y will make two jaws of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is secured by a ribbed adapter h to a carrier g transversely adjustable on a slide e movable on a saddle c carried by trunnions c<2> from the framing d. The blank is located by stops i, i<2>. For jaw blanks of the same pattern but smaller, a corresponding adapter is used and packing-pieces are placed between the blanks and the stops. The carrier is adjustable for the cut by bolts and slots e' and a screw g<2> of fine pitch. The slide is traversed one tooth space after each cut by a screw f geared to a stiffly working pinion o<2> carrying ratchet teeth adapted to be rotated by an adjustably-mounted pawl r in one direction only. The pawl is set so that the motion of the slide takes place while the blank is clear of the wheel. If desired, a second pawl may be arranged so that the machine cuts on both strokes. The wheel spindle is carried on a slide m adjustable on ways m<6> parallel to the ways on the saddle c and carried by a platform k on 'the frame d. A bolt n working in a T-groove clamps the slide m in position when set. The saddle c is oscillated by a segmental worm-wheel gearing with a worm on the shaft l having a reversing belt drive with shippers z rocked through linkage w, v by tappets t angularly adjustable on one of the trunnions. A modified form of work-holder is shown in Fig.. 7, suitable for holding blanks for jaws of the form shown in Fig. 3. The machine may be modified so that the work may be held stationary after adjustment and the cutter carried so as to swing across the work, and the cutter head may be traversed to the work to put on the cut. The right or left hand inclination of the thread portion to correspond to the face of the rotating ring with which they engage is provided for by holding the jaw on the carrier so that the longitudinal centre line of its threaded edge. passes above or below the axis of the saddle c.
