Electricity, supplying ; gas and liquid meters.- After prepayment, a disk 1 is rotated, and a pin 7 on a spring 2 on the disk engages and rotates an arm 3, winding up a spring 5 which connects it to a second arm 4, until the latter is freed from the notched lug 9 on a spring-actuated lever 8 owing to the depression of the lever by the arm 3. The arm 4 then rotates rapidly under the action of the spring 5 until it engages the shoulder 14 on the pivot 10 of the spring-actuated lever 16, turning that lever so that it engages the cut-away portion of the shaft 17, which has been brought into position by the rotation of the disk 18 from the disk 1 through gearing (not shown). In this position, the arm 6, which is integral with the arm 4, closes the circuit through the contact 19, or opens the valve of a gas, liquid, &c. meter. A block 13 depresses the pin 7 and spring 2 to permit the complete rotation of the disk 1 by hand. Several coins may be inserted and a consequent rotation imparted to the shaft 17. The meter &c. mechanism then returns the shaft 17 until the cut-away portion allows the adjustable spring 15 to withdraw the arm 16, rotating the spindle 10 and permitting the arm 4 to continue its rotation and open the circuit &c.
