Forced ventilation; valves.-Relates to a system of ventilating buildings, mines, &c. in which compressed air is used to operate valves governing ventilating-channels and also to supply air directly to the rooms &c. Air is forced into a receiver a by means of a suitably-driven fan b, a check valve e preventing escape of air. Connected to the receiver a are a number of pipes o<1> leading to valves h, which consist of flexible bags of suitable material, and are distended so as to close the passages through the building when air is admitted to them by opening the cocks i. The valves are opened by turning two-way cocks h<1> which are also provided with small balloons h<2> to indicate whether the valve h is open or closed. Air is supplied to the rooms through the floor-space k by means of fans m operated by compressed air from the receiver a ; or it may be supplied directly from the receiver and distributed by the pipes o<1> and distributors o. Disinfectant or other liquid contained in a vessel q is forced out by compressed air and distributed by spraying-devices r connected to cocks t by flexible pipes s. Compressed air from the receiver a is also used to operate pistons u, and to open or close fan-lights v. The air admitted to the building may be heated by steam coils p &c.
