Abstract

25,611. Crain, R. L. Nov. 13. Bending; corrugating.-A strip near the inner edge of each sheet of a loose-leaf binder is rendered flexible by bending or corrugating or otherwise stretching the paper in reverse directions and straightening out the sheet again if desired. The paper is thus weakened at the parts treated. In a preferred form, the sheet as in Fig. 6 is first corrugated for a short distance between rollers d, h. The corrugations are then reversed between similar rollers e, i or by reversing the sheet and redirecting it between rollers d, h. The sheet may be finally smoothed between rollers f, j. The lower rollers h, i, j are adjustably and slidably held in guides and are moved at the proper time into engagement with the upper rollers by cams on the shafts E, F, G. A bar on a gate g prevents the sheets from being fed except at the right time, when it is lifted off the feed-roller 5 by means actuated from a crank on the shaft F, and a small roller 6 is simultaneously lowered on to the sheet. Suitable spur gearing is used to drive the various shafts and rollers at the proper relative speeds.
