Abstract

24,531. Swan, E. R., and McDonnell, G. E. Nov. 2. Controlling automatically; ventilators.-Relates to a combined inlet and outlet venti!ator for railway carriages, ships, buildings, &c. Within a casing 3 are disposed flues 11, 12 extending from the roof of the car &c. nearly to the floor, and closed at the bottom by hit-and-miss valves 15, 16. The casing is divided into compartments 7, 9 by a partition 5, the compartment 9 being further divided into compartments 8, 8<a> by a partition 6. The foul-air flue 12 communicates with the compartment 8, which is closed to the rest of the casing but is provided with an inlet 42 for the withdrawal of foul air from the car. The fresh-air flue 11 leads into the chamber 8a which communicates at the bottom with the compartment 7, in which are disposed heating and cooling coils 40 for attemperating the incoming air, and a filter screen moistened by water, supplied from a tank 35, a drip pan 38, and waste pipe 39 being provided at the lower end of the screen. The flues 11, 12 communicate with a casing 4 situated above the roof 1 and divided into longitudinal passages 23, 22. A sliding valve 27 is situated within the passage 23, and is operated by the wind caused by the motion of the car &c. to deflect air into the flue 11. Screens 25 prevent the ingress of cinders &c., and openings 26 are made in the side of the casing to permit of the ready removal of any debris that may lodge in the casing. Within the casing 22 are disposed two hinged valves 30 connected together by a link 31 ; these valves are operated by the wind so as to close the passage towards the wind, and cause a suction of foul air from the car through the flue 12. The valves 15, 16 are operated by means of chains 17, the valves being caused to rotate when moved longitudinally by means of spiral slots 21 engaging with pins 20. The chains 17 are connected to arms 18 fastened to a shaft 19, so that they are operated simultaneously. The ventilation is automatically regulated by means of a weighted lever 44, Fig. 6, engaging with an arm 43 fitted to the shaft 19. As the current of air increases, it tends to depress the valve 15, raising the arm 43 and giving the lever 44 and weight 47 greater leverage about the shaft 19.
