Abstract

22,546. Hart, F. B. Oct. 12. Rail joints.-Each rail end in a scarfed rail joint is rolled or moulded so that the area of every cross-section, except at the immediate end, is equal to or slightly less than the area of the rail. The meeting surfaces are formed with curved ends, as shown. The metal at the extremities of the web portions of the splice fits between the head and foot and against the web of the adjoining rail, as shown at c-cl and e-f, Fig. 1. The joint is secured by two or more bolts, flat places being left for the bolt heads and nuts to permit of expansion. The web portions of the joint may be parallel to the splice, as shown, or they may be parallel to the rail web throughout their length, the ends being joggled to engage one another.
