Abstract
20,372. Schwarzschild, S. Nov. 21, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Moulding boots and shoes.-Relates to the manufacture of seamless footholds or overshoes. A mould of the exact size and shape as the interior of the desired shoe, and preferably made of porcelain, is repeatedly dipped into a solution of rubber in naphtha to which may be added any desired colouring-matter &c. After each dipping, the naphtha is allowed to evaporate, until finally a uniform deposit of rubber is obtained to form the body portion a, a<1>, Figs. 1 and 2, of the shoe. A toe-cap b, sole-piece c, reinforcing-strip e, and, if desired, a gusset f, which may be integral with the strip c, are then cemented to the body a, and the shoe is then vulcanized while still on the mould. The shoe may finally be varnished or otherwise finished off. If desired, the shoe may be provided with an elastic heel-strap g, which may be vulcanized, cemented, or otherwise permanently attached to the shoe, or detachably secured to it by means of glove fastenings. If desired, a portion of the rubber may be removed from the top of the shoe, to form a foothold of the sandal type, in which case, a reinforcing- strip is cemented round the edge of the opening. For some purposes, the sole-piece c and the toe-cap b, or all the reinforcing-pieces, may be dispensed with.
