Abstract

19,951. Jones, H. Sefton-, [Decker Electrical Manufacturing Co.]. Sept. 7. Primary batteries.- To fill or empty simultaneously a number of cells connected in series, main conduits and branch conduits made of insulating-material are employed and are of such a length and such small bore that leakage of current through the liquid therein is negligible. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, the cells 1 are of lead, and are supported by the insulating-crate 8 and separated by insulating - material 9 ; e a c h cell contains two negative plates enclosed in porous pots 5, and one positive plate. Near the bottom of each cell are the minor conduits 2, 3, of, say, hard rubber. The conduits 2 communicate with the porous pots 5 by means of bosses 4 and coupling-tubes 6, while the conduits 3 communicate with the spaces 7 outside the porous pots. Within the cells are insulating auxiliary bottoms 10, on which the minor conduits 2, 3 are vulcanized. The main conduits outside the cells, preferably made of bard rubber, are vulcanized to the auxiliary bottoms through openings 13. The minor conduits have rubber nipples 14 projecting into sockets 14' of the main conduits, the rubber parts being vulcanized together. In a second construction, the cells are of hard rubber with the main and minor conduits vulcanized to the bottom thereof and connected by nipples passing from the interior conduits through the bottom into sockets in the exterior conduits, the parts being vulcanized together. In a third construction, lead cells have auxiliary rubber bottoms with conduits thereon, vulcanized to a rubber base below the cell, while the main conduits are of metal. In a fourth construction, the cell is of rubber with a rubber base, and the-main conduits are of metal. The porous pots and the positive electrodes are held at their bottoms by bridges 44, Fig. 2. The cells are covered by rubber lids 53 with gas vents 54 therein, the lids being sprung to insert them in position.
