Abstract

Rails; chair keys and wedges.-In railway and tramway rails in which renewable treads and checks are made in one piece, the tread 1, check 2, and yoke 3 are formed of resilient steel, so that the combined tread check and yoke can be sprang into the trough 4 of a girder 5 and held therein by its own elasticity. The girder 5 consists of two similar parts 10, 11, riveted together and provided with projections 8, 9 fitting into recesses in the yoke 3. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which the parts 10, 11 are separated a short distance by a cross channeliron 12. The joints in the various portions break joint. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that the combined tread and check may be further secured by wedges ; several other modifications are also described. In one form, separate #-shaped treads and checks are used, the lower limbs of which fit into undercut recesses in the trough of a girder, and are secured in position by vertically tapered wedges driven between them. The recesses may either be milled out, or the girder may be rolled in two parts which are afterwards riveted together. Separate treads and checks are also used with a bridge girder similar tn that shown in Fig. II. In another modification, Z-shaped treads and checks are employed, separated by wedges consisting of two longitudinally and oopositelv tapered portions. A modified wedge is described consisting of an elastic bent piece of steel expanded by a steel wedge, and in another form the wedge is made in two halves pressed apart by a tapered pin. A caulking of spelter or similar material may be used instead of wedges.
