Abstract

19,107. Lederer, L. Aug. 27. Cellulose esters, containing both nitro and acidyl groups, are made by the action of acid chlorides or anhydrides upon nitrocelluioses, such as collodion-cotton, celluloid, &c. In examples, acetyl chloride or acetic anhydride reacts with collodion-cotton. An inert liquid, such as carbon tetrachloride, may be added to the reaction mixture. The mixed e,ter, which is soluble in acetone, separates on adding water ; when it is desired to recover the excess of anhydride or chloride, however, the water is replaced by a liquid, such as benzene or eirbon tetrachloride, which does not dissolve the ester. The mixed ester, either alone or in conjunction with acetyl-, butyl or other simple esters of cellulose, may be formed into artificial silk in the usual way, and the filaments employed for manufacturing woven and other fabrics, for ballistic, pyrotechnic, and other purposes. Films and ribbons may also be produced. The products may be wholly or partly denitrated in the known ways, and the acid residues may be wholly or partly split off.
