Abstract

18,212. Hall, J. A. F. Aug. 14. Telephone systems; telegraphs.-Means are provided to enable a signalman to communicate by telephone with the driver of a train standing at a home signal and also for conveying telegraphic messages to the driver through the rails, except when the engine stands on an insulated section S extending between the distant and the home signal. The lever carrying the signal counterweight has a chain attached to it, which passes round a pulley and is connected to two spring pushes E. A divided brush, carried by a bracket on the engine, passes over double ramps R adapted to be connected to the spring pushes, and if the signal is in the " on " position, a circuit is completed and a miniature semaphore on the engine is actuated accordingly. When the engine is standing at the signal, a telephone circuit is completed through the double ramps and divided brush from the signal cabin M to the engine. Coloured lamps may replace the miniature semaphore at night, and a snow guard is placed over the contacts. The circuit for telegraphy is completed through the engine wheels and through small spring rollers on the engine frame. The rails are connected by wires T across the insulated sections.
