Box-making machines. -In apparatus for feeding metal sheets to machines for making parts of boxes by punching and stamping in a step-by-step manner,the work grip is adapted to be opened by hand and closed by foot. The gripping-jaws k are operated by a cam m oscillated by a handle o or by a flexible cable p from a foot-lever. The jaws are mounted on a lateral slide f running on rollers f<1> on a guide g attached to a slide a which moves towards the die e along a guide b and rest h, rollers i minimizing friction along the latter. A spring pin t engages holes on the guide b which determine the distance between the rows. To vary the distance between the latter, the holes may be in blocks the distance apart of which may be varied by packing ; or strips s with holes at intervals may be removably mounted in the guide. The lateral feed may be obtained by moving the edge of the sheet against an abutment w, a removable abutment x being used to commence a fresh row so as to get the punching staggered. A support z held up by the slide a prevents the centre of the sheet from sagging while the first few rows are being punched. In a modification, Fig. 9, the lateral movement is obtained automatically at each descent of the tool by means of pawl-andratchet mechanism 2, 7, the amount of feed being adjusted by altering the length of the lever 4. In this case the abutment w is unnecessary, and the latter may be obviated in band-feeding by notches on the guide g, such notches being engaged by spring pins.
