Abstract

12,073. Kingzett, C. T., and Kingzett, E. P. May 23. Balls.-Golf and other balls are constructed with cores of material, e.g. gelatin, agar agar, glue, isinglass, carrageen, gum tragacanth, gum arabic, albumen, or starch in a colloid state. The cores, with or without a central neucleus of other material, are encased in a shell of gutta-percha or, as shown in Fig. 2, encased in rubber B, followed by the usual coating C of gutta-percha, balata, or other material. A solution of the above-mentioned substances may be used, in which case the solution is poured into moulds to form half-balls, with or without a hollow centre. The faces of the two halves obtained on congelation are moistened or heated so as to secure cohesion, and the ball is finished, as shown in Fig. 4, where the core A is encased in a winding C of rubber and a final coating D of gutta-percha. Hollow balls of rubber, gutta-percha, skin, or other suitable material may be filled, with the solution, and after congelation the ball may be completed in any of usual methods. When an inner solid nucleus is to be used, the core is,formed by frequent dipping of the nucleus into the solution and subsequent, congelation, or by wrapping strips of suitably-prepared colloid round the nucleus. Other substances used in the construction of cores are casein, soap, waxes, collodion, dough, or freshly precipitated alumina, silica, magnesia, &c. When wax is used, it is preserved in a plastic condition by oils or other solvents. With gelatinous, albuminous, or gummy cores, an admixture of water and alcohol, treacle, honey, or glycerine may be used, and, to prevent the gelatinous substances from decomposing and to render them insoluble in water, the cores are treated with formaldehye vapour or solution. Cores may also be constructed of grapes or of spheres cut out of such vegetables as carrots, turnips, or potatoes in either a cooked or uncooked condition. To preserve the central cores in a mobile condition, a coating of varnish, rubber solution, or collodion is applied.
