Abstract

11,934. Perkins, E. J. May 22. Knitted fabrics.-The fabric is composed of a number of threads, one of which forms the base or groundwork while the other or others form patterns in imitation of embroidery, as distinguished from square, diamond, and like patterns. Circular knitting-machines.-A proportion of the needles have their stems inwardly bent so that a number of circles or arcs of different diameters are formed. The outer set 2 of needles takes the ground thread only, this being fed from a threadguide of ordinary form. The inner set or sets 3 of needles take the ground thread and also, when required, supplementary or patterning threads. The latter are fed by guides 4 introduced between the two sets 2, 3 in such a way that only the two sets 3 take the design threads. The guides 4 are formed on the forward ends of slides 5 arranged in a grooved block 6, and are moved into action, away from the centre of the machine, by springs 7. The design threads 9 are led from bobbins 10 and through eyes 11 to the guides 4. These are held when out of action by pivoted spring-controlled detents 14 carried on the block 6. When the slides 5 are moved inwards, out of action, the detents drop and engage pins 15. To release the slides and bring the guides 4 into action, a cam 16 is employed, to trip one or both the detents as they pass, the springs 7 then drawing the guides 4 into operative position. Cams 16, 17, 17<a> are mounted on a sliding standard which is brought into the required positions by the aid of pattern mechanism. To withdraw both the guides 4 from action, the standard is elevated sufficiently for the cam 17 to engage the ends of the slides 5. To throw out one guide and put in another, the standard is elevated into such a position that the cam 16 trips both the detents 14, while one of the guides 4 is prevented from moving back by the corresponding cam 17, or 17<a> being sufficiently elevated to engage a roller 18 on the corresponding slide 5.
