Abstract

10,764. Smitt, H. M. May 8. Clinometers; compasses, magnetic. -In apparatus for ascertaining the dip and strike of strata, the compass needle is normally fixed, and when the whole weight of the boritng-rod is allowed to rest on the device, the clinometer pendulum is depressed to simultaneously mark the inclination and to liberate the compass needle. When the boring-rods are raised, the compass needle is again fixed. The casing 1 of the device, Fig. 1, is provided with a union 5 at the bottom for attaching to the core pipe, and a socket 2 at the top for attaching to the boring-rods. The socket 2 is adapted to receive a slight sliding motion, and is attached to the casing 1 by a water-tight joint of which the packing 3 is compressed by a gland 4. A spring 14 in the sleeve attached to the gland 4 keeps the socket 2 normally in its extreme outward position. The case 18 of the compass needle 22, Figs. 1 and 4, is contained in the top of the union 5 to which a bell-shaped body 6 is also attached above the compass. A rod 8 works in the top of of this body, a stuffing-box being provided the gland 9 of which forms a guide for the piston 10. The pendulum 31 is attached to the lower end of a rod 8 by a universal joint, and swings over a dish-shaped plate 23 on which the record paper 29, Fig. 4, is fixed. The plate 23 is attached to the sleeve 24, which passes through the glass plate 20 and supports in a locked position a disk 26 attached to the compass needle 22. The pendulum 31 and plate 23 are kept in their extreme upward positions by springs 12, 25. Holes 34 in the socket 2 and union 5 permit the free passage of the clearing and cooling water. When the socket 2 is depressed by the weight of the boring-rods, the pointer 32 of the clinometer perforates the paper 29 and depresses the plate 23, thus releasing the compass needle. When this takes up its N-S position, the socket 2 is released and the compass needle is again locked.
