Abstract

10,219. Rink, J. J. May 1. Hydrogen and chlorine are obtained during the electrolysis of brine by means of a mercury cathode to obtain alkali. The feature .of the process consists in using a diaphragm b, Fig. 2, and providing separate concentration vessels k, i for the anode and cathode compartments a<1>, g, through which the separate electrolytes are circulated. The alkali amalgam is passed into a washing-box o, where alkali is formed with liberation of hydrogen, and the mercury is passed back to the cathode cell g by means of a pump n<1>.
