Calcium carbide.-The furnace in which the materials are melted is tapped and the molten product is run off into chilled moulds, or over chilled plates, or is allowed to spread out into a thin sheet. It is thus quickly cooled and the carbide is obtained in a hard stony condition, in which it does not absorb moisture and is readly broken into small pieces for use.
