Abstract
9584. Foveaux, F. J. April 24. Rotary cylindrical valves; actuating valves.-Relates to a fluid-distributing controller or valve, and to a system of gas, water, or other fluid distribution by means of which certain areas may be isolated in cases of emergency. The valve, shown in Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a four-way cylindrical casing 1 fitted with a yoke-shaped valve, the working surface 18 of which consists of a part of a cylinder narrower than the distance between the edges of the adjacent outlets. The valve spindle 6, Fig. 5, is provided with arms 15 which engage in sector-shaped holes 16 in the valve, which are large enough to afford lost motion in opening or closing. The spindle 6 is carried up into a casing 2, Fig. 3, closed by a cap 13 set flush with the street. A pointer 11 indicates the position of the valve. To enable the valve to be opened against high-pressure fluids, the pressure is relieved by means of a relief valve 21, which is normally closed by a spring 29 and is opened by the levers 25, 27, 28 during the first movement of the spindle. Fig. 6 illustrates the system of distribution in which the area is divided into blocks by the mains 3, the valves 49 being fitted to the pipes 3 where they cross. In case of fire or other emergency in a block of buildings 48, this block and the area immediately contiguous is isolated by closing the valves 49, as indicated by the short cross-lines.
