Abstract

9428. James, C. April 21. Mechanical stoking; grates.-Means are provided for adapting a chain-grate stoker for use with either natural or forced draught, and also for allowing one or more of a series of stokers to be put out of action independently of the others. The front projecting portion of the chain grate is enclosed by a casing, the side plates being formed with flanges f, which abut against partition walls o, making an air-tight joint. Sliding plates g are fitted to prevent the entrance of air at the lower edges of the casing, and doors i are provided in the front plate h. The top of the casing is formed with a hinged or sliding piece k, which can be replaced by a longer plate l when it is desired to put the stoker out of action, as shown in Fig. 2. A long dead-plate n prevents the escape of air through the hopper c when forced draught is being used. In order that forced or natural draught may be used independently with the separate stokers, partitions o are fixed between the ash-pits of adjacent pairs. The rear end of the grate may be made air-tight by the means described in Specification No. 3701, A.D. 1905.
