Abstract

9246. Schmid, W. A., and Macomber, C.J. April 19. Chucks.-Self-centring chucks adapted to hold straight or parallel and taper shanks of drills, reamers, taps, &c. have two adjustable jaws mounted in a special manner. A jaw-guide 1, Figs. 4 and 5, has recesses 2, 3 on opposite faces and at rightangles to one another. Projections 4 and a shouldered part 6 engage a corresponding body part 19, Fig. 3, for the drive, screws 18 merely holding the parts together. An external sleeve 14, secured in position by a small screw, fits the flange of a front cover-plate 2 secured to the jaw-guide at 25. The jaws, Fig. 7, are adjusted in the recesses 2, 3 by means of springs 12 and screws 10 accessible through holes in the casing of smaller diameter than the screws. The opposite faces of each jaw are slightly tapered at one side, so that, when a tapered shank is placed in the chuck and the screws 10 are set up against the flats on it, the jaws can rock to accommodate the taper.
