Abstract

8623. Friederici, O. R. April 10. Rail joints; chairs.- Relates to rail joints in which supporting - plates are placed under the rail ends, and consists in tightly supporting these plates by means of wedges supported in slots in downward extensions of the fish-plates. The fishplates may fit closely to the web of the rail, or they may have inclined planes d, e to engage the inclined surfaces on the rails, as shown in Fig. 13. Downward slotted extensions c support the loose plate i and wedges m, which engage the inclined surfaces of the underplate o when drawn together by the bolts r. The upper surface of the underplate may conform to the section of the rail foot, and has flanges as shown. In a modification, there are two slots in each fish-plate to take two wedges side by side. The upper portions of the fish-plates may extend beyond the adjoining chairs, in which case they are slotted to clear them. A chair u for use with this invention has one fixed jaw v, Fig. 3, and one movable jaw w secured to the sleeper by a holding-down bolt.
