Abstract

7375. Basset, L.-P. March 27, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Regenerative batteries.-Two batteries L, R, in series, are employed, and in one, L, an electric current is generated by the dissolution of a metal, such as copper, from electrodes 7, in a suitable electrolyte, such as a mixture of sulphuric acid and bromine supplied from tanks 19,13. The other battery, R, is traversed by this current and by the exhausted electrolyte which contains a metallic salt, for example, copper sulphate, in solution. The liquid passes to the battery R by way of a vessel 17, in which it is charged with a reducing-agent, such as sulphurous acid. The copper is deposited by electrolytic action upon cathodes 8, the exhausted liquid being returned to the tank 19 by way of a tank 11 and a heater 18. In the latter, sulphurous acid and bromine are driven off, and are returned to the parts 17, 13 respectively. When there is a sudden fall of electromotive force in the battery L, the liquid supply from the tanks 19, 13 is reversed so as to pass from the battery R to the battery L, the former then generating current, and the latter being regenerated. It is stated that the battery may drive a motor for working the circulating- pump 12, and that the starting of the motor and the reversal of direction of the liquid flow may be effected by means of a float and the varying liquidlevel in the tank 11. Other reducing-agents, such as phosphorous acid, may be used, and instead of copper other metals readily deposited electrolytically may be employed.
