2943. Mountford, F. Feb. 7. Ornamenting glass, metal, pottery, &c. surfaces. - Relates to a machine and process for decorating caps, jugs, basins, saucers, plates, and other flat or hollow articles of pottery, paper, papier mÔchÚ, metal, glass, wood, celluloid, enamel, &c. The article to be decorated is held in a chuck h<3>,Fig.20, supported by springs; h', which are carried by a disk h<1> and provided with a spindle h mounted in bearings in an intermittently rotating table a<2> the chuck being normally held from rotating by means of a pin i<1> engaging with a recess i in the spindle. The process consists in applying a series of decorations to the article as it is carried round by the table a<2>, which is rotated through an angle dependent upon the number of decorations to be applied. Fig. 17 indicates diagrammaticallyone process which is carried out in four stages. At 1, the article to be decorated is placed in the chuck h, and the table is then rotated through a rightangle to the position 2, in which position, the chuck is held stationary by means of the pin i, Fig. 20, while the base and handle of the article are decorated. In position 3, Fig. 17, a cam-surface is engages with a bowl i<2>, Fig. 20, and withdraws the pin i<1> from the recess i, leaving the article free to be rotated by friction devices, during which rotation decorations are applied to the outside of the article. After leaving position 3, the bowl i<2> is released and the chuck is rotated by a friction surface i' until the pin il comes opposite to the recces i, when the pis is forced into engagement with the recess by means of a spring. In position 4, the article is held stationary while the rim is decorated. The next movement of the table brings the chuck to its original position, when the article can be removed for drying &c. and another placed in position. The various operations are carried on simultaneously. The table a' is intermittently rotated by means of a cam d<1>, Fig. 5, on the main shaft c<1>, which operates a slide e connected by a link e<8> to a pawl e<4> engaging with a ratchet e<5> carried by the spindle e<6> of the table. The table is firmly held during each operation by means of a slide f, Fig. 3, which is forced into engagement with a projection a<4> on one side of the table, turning the table backwards a little until another projection a<4> on the opposite side of the table engages with a weighted pivoted lever f<5>, Fig. 2. The slide f is operated by a pivoted lever f<4> which engages with a cam d<4> on the shaft c<1>. The decoration of the inside base of the article is accomplished by means of a pattern device j<7>, Fig. 3, which is reciprocated by means of a lever j pivoted to a shaft j' and operated by a cam d. Colour is applied to the pad j<7> by rollers k<3> carried in bearings on spring-controlled rods k<4> carried by a frame l<5>, the rollers receiving colour from a plate j<4> fed from a drip-bottle j<3>. The plate j<4> is carried on a shaft j<5>, which can be adjusted axially by means of a screw j<6> and is rotated by means of a ratchet-wheel k operated by a pawl rod k<1>, in turn rotated,by a cam d<8> on the shaft c<1>. The bearings of the rollers k<3> contact with a cam-shaped bracket k<5>, and the colour is transferred to the pattern device j<7> by the rocking of a shaft l<4>, carrying the frame l<5>, by means of a cam-operated slide l connected to the shaft by levers l<2>, l<3>. While the bottom of the cup &c. is being decorated, the handle is also decorated by means of the pattern device shown in Fig. 9. A cam d<9> on the shaft c' depresses a spring-controlled rod m<1>, carrying a rack which engages with a pinion m' mounted on a shaft m<3>, thus rocking the latter and with it a lever m<4> carrying a pattern pad m<5>, and bringing the latter into the position shown in dotted lines. In this position, the pad receives colour from a roller n<2> carried by a rod n<3>, which is reciprocated by means of a lever n<5>, pivoted to the shaft j<1>, Fig. 5, and actuated by means of a cam d7 on the shaft c<1>. The roller n<2> receives colour from a plate n<1>, supplied by a drip-bottle n. On the rising of'the rod m<1>, the lever m<4> and pad m<2> are rocked into the position shown in full lines and decorate the handle of the cup &c. The pattern pad m<5> may be mounted adjustably on the lever m<4>, and may also be mounted on a universal joint so that the pad m<5> can always conform to the cup &c. handle should the latter be not straight. The decoration of the outside of the cup &c. is carried on at position 3, Fig. 17. During this process, the cup &c. is rotated by friction devices or in the case of heavy patterns by the pattern device itself. Fig. 12 shows one form of apparatus in which a sectorial pattern device engages with the outside of the cup &c., colour being supplied by rollers q mounted above a slide q<2>, which is reciprocated by means of a cam q<5> to bring the rollers q against a colour roller p<1> supplied from a drip-bottle p. The roller p<1> is mounted on a shaft p<2>, which is rotated by means of a belt or gearing connected to the driving-shaft b<2>, Fig. 3, of the machine, The cam q<5> is mounted on the shaft q<7>, which carries the pattern device r and also sectorial friction surfaces r<2>, r<1> adapted to engage, respectively, with the disk h<1>, Fig. 20, of the chuck and with a device t, Fig. 18, so as to rotate the cup &c. and prevent blurring of the pattern-. The device t<2> consists of an upper and a lower disk, and is adapted to hold the cup down on the chuck during decoration of the outer surface. The device is carried on a shaft t, which is raised and lowered by means of a lever t<1>, Figs. 3 and 5, pivoted to the shaft j<1> and actuated by a cam d' on the shaft c'. Instead of the sector r, Fig. 12, the pattern device may be carried by a slide mounted on the shaft q<7> so that various interchangeable pattern devices may be used. Fig. 14 shows a modification in which a reciprocating decorating-device is used. A slide u<4> carries an interchangeable pattern device u<5> and friction devices v, and is reciprocated along guide-rods u<3> by means of a toothed sector v<4>, operating a rack on the slide by means of gearing v<5>. Several different colours may be applied to the outside of the cup by arranging a number of sectors such as r, either convex or concave, and allowing them to operate in turn, the rotation of the table a<2> being modified according to the number of colours applied. Fig. 27 shows an arrangement for applying metallic &c. powders. Designs in size are impressed on the cup &c. by pattern devices r, and the cup rotates in contact with a roller y<1> mounted in a box y containing the metallic &c. powder, the excess of which is removed by a brush. A pattern may be transferred in intaglio by employing suitable pattern-devices when the article is in the clay state, and suitable arrangements may be made to impress designs in wax so that the article may afterwards be etched by acid. Fig. 23 shows a modified form'of resilient pattern pad w<1>, consisting of a pattern pad w<3> and rubber backing w<2>, between which is a plate of wood. The pattern device is interchangeably secured to a disk w by a shank w<4> secured by a clamp w<6> and by dowel pins w<5>. Fig. 24 shows a further decorating-device consisting of a series of porous pattern pads x<1> fitting into colour wells x in the edge of the disk w, by means of which a design of different colours can be produced. After the decoration of the outer surface of the cup &c., position 4, Fig. 17, is arrived at, where the rim of the article is decorated by means of colour rollers s<7>, Fig. 2, mounted on a cross-head carried by a shaft s<3> rotated from the main shaft c' by spur and bevel gearing. The shaft 8<3> can be reciprocated vertically by means of a lever s<12> pivoted to the shaft j<1> and actuated by a cam d' on the shaft c'. Colour is supplied from a drip-bottle s carried by a disk s', and dtips through to the undersurface of the disk and on to the rollers. The disk s' may be dished, the rollers s<7> being correspondingly inclined. For decorating the inside of saucers &c., the shaft s<3> is provided with a cross -head carrying colour rollers below which are mounted small rollers or wheels.
