Abstract
2438. Herbert, A., and Vernon, P. V. Jan. 31. Lathes; toolholders.-A c o mbined tool - holder and steady rest for use with turret lathes in turning bars or forgings has the tool carried in an adjustable slide, with means for moving it in and out while the cut is on or not, the movement being controlled by an adjustable stop and the thrust of the tool taken by two adjustable roller steadies. The tool. holder shown is bolted at c, Fig. 1, to the face of a turret. The tool h is supported on a rest j, retained in the holder by a loosely-fitting pin j<1> and adjusted for height by screws k. Screws l clamp the tool when adjusted. The slide e carrying the tool is traversed on the body of the holder by rack teeth on the slide engaging a pinion cut on a shaft n worm geared to a spindle q provided with a mitted nut; with lock-nuts to take up end play and with an undercut disk with adjustable stop t A stop-bar x may be slid out of the path of the stop t when it is required to turn the spindle freely. The tool slide may be clamped in position when taking heavy cuts by a screw g, Fig. 5, bearing against the adjusting-gib f. The roller steadies 1 are carried on pins 2, fixed at each end to projections on slides 4, and half cut-away to give a maximum clearance for large reductions in diameter. The slides 4 are notched to engage collars on screws 7 supported in bored holes 10. Graduated collars 11 and reference lines on the slides provide for an exact return to any previous setting. A screw 12 working in a pivotal pin 13 imparts equal clamping pressure to the screws 7 by a conical or spherical shoulder 14 and plungers 15. An inclined passage z<1> in the body of the holder gives access for lubricant when turning from back to front. The tool slide e may be traversed by the method described in Specification No. 3417, A.D. 1898, instead of as described above..
