Abstract

2083. Hey, H. Jan. 27 Cells and receptacles have their electrodes &c. specially arranged to increase the efficiency of the current in the treatment of fibrous materials, in cleansing, bleaching, extracting, carbonizing, dyeing, stripping or removing dye, disinfecting, or sterilizing. A grid 2 of suitable material is covered on one or more surfaces with an electrode 3 of lead, zinc, tin, aluminium, carbon, or other suitable conductor, placed above or below it and connected to the current source by a wire 4 insulated by a glass tube 5 or the like. The other electrode 6 may be formed similarly, and is removable from the vessel. The fibrous material is placed between the two grids in a suitable liquid during electrolysis of the liquid. The products evolved at the lower electrode diffuse through the fibrous material. A four-pole switch may be used to reverse the current when necessary. The electrolyte may be a suitable acid, or oxide or salt of a metal, e.g. chromium, vanadium, manganese, titanium, iron, copper, and the like. A steam-heated pipe 8, Fig. 1, may be used to assist the circulation. The liquid may be cooled by a water-pipe coiled round the interior of the vessel, or led straight across, near the surface, and insulated, so as to serve as the top electrode,
