Abstract
1906. Armour, W. Jan. 25. Pyrometers.- Relates to electrically-controlled recording - apparatus and alarms for use with thermo-electric &c. pyrometers for use in iron, steel, pottery, &c. manufacture to give a continuous &c. record of the temperature in a furnace &c., or to indicate when the maximum and minimum temperatures have been attained. The coil 2, Figs. 1 and 2, of an electric meter is in circuit with the thermo-electric pyrometer, while a contact-arm 5, carried by but insulated from the coil, and two adjustable stops 9, 10 are arranged in a relay circuit. This circuit controls the passage of a current through electromagnets 7,8, which operate maximum and minimum markers 24, 25 and switches 26, 27 con trolling the circuits through the alarm. The markers 24, 25 are adjusted to the positions on the recording - d rum 17 corresponding to the required maximum and minimum temperatures, and are clamped in adjusted position by screws 29. The contacts 9, 10 are similarly adjusted along a slot 18 and clamped in position by nuts 19. Rotating contacts, such as are described in Specification No. 1867, A.D. 1866, [Abridgment Class Electricity, Measuring &c.], are used, motion being imparted to them from the recording-drum through the gearing shown. As shown in Fig. 4, the contact-arm 5 moves over a number of metal disks 30 separated by mica sheets and connected to a rheostat 34. The cylinder made up of the disks 30 is inwardly or outwardly curved according to the position of the end of the contact-arm 5. This arm and the rheostat are in circuit with a motor 32, the speed of which varies with the position of the arm. The marker 39 is operated so as to make a continuous record on the drum 17, by a governor 35 of the form shown operated by the motor. A ring 37 on the governor sleeve operates the marker 39, and a contact-disk 38 may act in conjunction with maximum and minimum contacts 41, 42 to control the circuit of an alarm. Fig. 7 shows the contactarm 5<1> arranged to move between rotating contacts 9, 10 so as to control the circuit of an alarm as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. An extension 5 of this arm carries the marker, which is brought into contact with the recording strip 56 intermittently by the attraction of electro - magnets which are in contact with a make-and-break switch 48 mounted on and rotating with the drum spindle 53. The periphery of the switch 48 has alternate conducting and non-conducting parts. The apparatus may be used with a number of furnaces.
