[Published under Patents Act, 1901.] - Sleepers; rails, securing to sleepers.-Permanent-way rails are supported on short grooved composite sleepers in the form . of a cross, and are secured thereto by special means. Fig. 1 shows the sleepers 1, formed of cement or like material strengthened with embedded metal wires 4, and having wedgeshaped grooves 3 on their under surfaces, into which the earth is wedged to prevent them from being displaced. Rectangular grooves, on the upper surfaces of the sleepers, receive the ends of flat metal tie-bars 8 so that their upper surfaces lie flush with the surfaces of the sleepers. The rail is secured in position by bolts 12 passing through the rail web and through elongated slots in clamping - plates 13, to allow for expansion of the rails. The plates 13 rest upon the upper surface of the tie-bars, and are secured to the sleeper by bolts passing through the tie-bars and sleeper into the recesses 3. The heads of the bolts bear against the underside of a flat metal plate 17 wedged into the recesses 3. The number and relative position of the strengthening-wires 4 in the-sleepers may be varied, and barbs are provided within the sleeper to prevent them from being displaced longitudinally. A modified reinforcement consists of a strip of woven wire.
