Abstract
25,650. Bowater, B. Dec. 9. Bending.-Relates to means for utilizing both the forward and backward movements of an oscillated lever to obtain a continuous rotation in one direction. The device is described applied to a Jim crow. Upon the spindle A are provided two ratchet-wheels C, D with oppositely directed teeth. One wheel C is fixed to the spindle, the other D being loosely mounted and connected to the spindle through the bevel reversing-gearing d, F, h, the pinions F being carried by the casing G, which has stays embracing the arms of the device to prevent rotation. The motions of the ratchet D may be reversed by any other construction of gearing instead of the bevel-gear. In addition to the forward-driving ratchet teeth c, the wheel C carries oppositely directed teeth c<1> which impart a reverse rotation to the spindle to take off the pressure from the work. If necessary, a double-acting ratchet may be provided in this reversing-device. The pawls that effect engagement are normally pressed by springs k, Fig. 4, and are provided with handles k<1>, which may be arranged by catches k<2> to keep any pawl out of action. In the jim crow, a transverse guide secured to the frame embraces and guides the spindle A and its sleeve H.
