Abstract

21,565. Andrews, J. D. F. Oct. 23. Signals, electric; recording signals.-Relates to the selective transmission and recording of signals by the electric control of pendulums having different rates of vibration. Such signals may be employed as call signals for telephonic or telegraphic purposes. The pendulum or vibrator produces no sound in itself, but is arranged to sound a bell or close an electric circuit when a certain amplitude of vibration has been obtained. The same pendulum is used for transmitting and receiving purposes. Fig. 1 illustrates the application of the invention to a party-line telephone system. At each station the pendulum bob B normally occupies a position peculiar to that station, and indicated by the number of the station as shown on an adjacent scale. When another station is to be called, the pendulum bob is correspondingly adjusted, the key V depressed, and the pendulum started with the finger. The circuit being made and broken by the action of the pendulum on the contact-springs G, H, an intermittent current is sent through the magnet E to line, of the correct frequency to set the pen-. dulum at the selected station in vibration. An additional non-adjustable pendulum K is employed to ring a signal bell. When the pendulum reaches its full amplitude of vibration, the electro-magnet . E' is energized and the telephone hook unlocked. When the number of stations on the line is in excess of the number that can conveniently be distinguished by means of one pendulum, a series of pendulums is employed, one coming into action after another and cutting the preceding one out. Each pendulum may be arranged to strike a bell as it reaches its full amplitude, and, if each bell is of a different tune, chimes may be produced in this way. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the pendulums may carry distinctive type which effect impressions on paper when the full amplitude is reached.
