Abstract

21,034. Arnold, E., and La Cour, J. L. Oct. 19, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Distortion of field, preventing; field magnets.- Each of the main poles of a single-phase motor with commutating-poles is wound with a compensating-winding carrying the armature current and having ampere turns approximately equal to the number of armature ampere turns beneath the main pole, each commutating-pole being provided with two windings, one the ordinary commutating- winding connected in parallel with the armature or across the mains and the other in series with the compensating-windings and having ampere turns somewhat in excess of those on the armature between two main poles. In addition to the ordinary winding EW upon the main poles, the compensating-winding CW is provided in slots in the main pole-shoes. The winding W2 upon the commutating-poles is connected either in parallel with the armature or across the mains, and produces, under the commutating-poles, a strong field displaced approximately ninety degrees from the main field. A second winding W1, in series with the compensating-winding, is wound upon each commutating-pole. In the case of a series motor, at starting it is preferable to connect the winding W2 in parallel with the armature and the series resistance, as shown in Fig. 2.
